Culex Tarsalis

One of my jobs as Mayor of the big town of Amenia is to help control the mosquito population. This year, instead of arial spraying we decided to use Cass County Vector Control. It is beyond interesting to me!
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday I get the counts for the traps that are placed in various towns across Cass County.
Al, back at headquarters, sends out the counts. If there are other concerns Ben, the head vector man, sends out a message as well.

I hear about the mosquito complaints constantly. I was totally guilty of it myself! Now that I understand the measures taken to kill as many mosquitoes as possible I do not complain anymore.

After yesterdays count, we learned that the standing water in Cass County has caused an increase in mosquitoes...shocking, I know!!

I also learned that Cass County has an above average population of Culex Tarsalis mosquitoes. Those are the mosquitoes that carry the West Nile Virus. I thought all mosquitoes carried it.

Ben's advice was for people in Arthur, Casselton and Amenia, specifically, to wear bug spray and protective gear. Arthur had the highest count, Casselton came in 2nd and Amenia a distant 3rd. I wonder if it has anything to do with the amount of stagnant water between Casselton and Arthur? mmmm...probably!

Ok so that is my interesting information I have learned this week!
