Gus's trip to Lake

We headed to the lake this past weekend and had an interesting time. This was the first time in two years that Gus was able to come with us. He is attending school this summer and we wanted to try out his new found positive listening skills. Uncle Hal formerly called Gus “Bob Barker”; he was not real fond of Gus. This weekend he actual pet Gus and said he was not so bad anymore. We did not have any issues…well kindof…
Saturday night was a late night and Sunday was an early morning, thanks to Gus! Bill and I decided to sleep in the tent because Gus is not allowed in the cabin, Grandma Mac has issues with dogs and a strong dislikes for Gus. In fact, when we pulled up and Gus hopped out of the car her comment was, “I can not believe she brought that hoodlum of a dog down, he better not wreck anything.” I could tell that she was warming up to him. Soon she might even call him Gus instead of “that devil dog”.
Sunday morning we were awakened by Gus whinning at the tent door, so we hooked him to his cord and sent him outside to hang out. I fell back asleep because I assumed Bill was watching him, because he said he would. Silly me! After waking up to Bill’s loud snoring I realized that I was wrong. There on the ground was Gus’s collar; you know the kind that no dog can take off. Ha! Ha!
My dad was coming back from getting the paper and he headed West in the trailblazer and Bill headed East in the Magnum. I knew better, I stood on the beach and looked about seven cabins down to see four doggie legs up in the air and the dog rubbing on the ground. I instantly knew that it was Gus and he was rubbing in something. I ran down the beach to him and said “GUS”, very loudly. He hopped up, sat down, and looked at me under his eye lids. Out of the side of his mouth hung a stinky, dead, decaying fish skeleton! Its pungent odor was horrendous; I could smell it five feet away. I said “Gus, come,” he did, and dropped the dead fish at my feet, I almost lost it, I have never smelt anything as horrible as this before. We walked back to the cabin together, me gagging and Gus with his head down. After my stomach and my temper calmed down, I was impressed that he listened to directions. I guess Obedience school is kind of working, right?????

4th of July Fun

Spending time with Bill and the rest of the family at Lake Sally was amazing this weekend. Gus and Sandy headed to the kennel and we took the kayaks and headed down. The weather was beautiful and the lake was warm. Spending time with Brendan and Carter was a total blast. Here are a few pics to share!

The Bathroom Redo

Here are the pictures from the progress of the bathroom. YIKES!

Life without a toilet for two days was difficult. The neighbors did get a kick out of the new lawn ornament;P

Gus LOVED to help...or at least be wherever we were!
Gus was very concerned with the noise in the tub...

Finally done!

Meet Gus Five Years Later...

Five years ago Gus came into our lives, and we have never been the same...
Gus is a five year old Boxer-Lab cross. He is a sweet and wonderful boy, as long as someone is near him. We picked Gus up five days after our wedding, that is right we have been married for five years. Gus began his life with the Jim Storhoff family he then joined our family on June 19. We picked him up and peaceful life in Amenia ceased to exist.
Although Gus was free, we estimate he has cost us around the $10,000 mark over the past five years. That figure is a rounded figure that does not include the cost of food, treats, and normal medical check-ups.
There are many days people ask why? Why do you keep him? The answer is simple, we love him. With Bill gone the majority of the past five years, Gus has been with me through the ups and downs I have had. He sat with me through the twists and turns, sickness, and ouchies I have had. He has caused a few of the ouchies but for the most part he has been an amazing companion.
After about a year and six months with Gus we did get him his life companion, Sandy. The two are biscuits in a bag. Other than the falling out of the window incident, Sandy has been a God-sent for Gus. She helps ease his separation anxiety and provides a playmate while we are away.
You must be asking yourself what is the big deal with Gus, he sounds like a sweetie! In my next blog submission I will expand on the reason that Gus, who was initially free, has now cost us $10,000. Stay tuned!

Sandy's great escape

I have many stories involving Gus, the turkey eating, couch destroying, window jumping, kennel escapes, the trip to Rover's Playhouse, and of course my favorite, the eating of my wedding bouquet. Most people that know me, know all about Gus, however, they do not know very much about Sandy. This first submission is designed to show and tell you about what my sweet little girls is capable of or the ways inwhich Gus can manipulate.
Sandy managed to fall out of our upstairs window, scratch her way down the roof and finally fall eight feet to the ground. What? How? Oh my goodness is she OK? Those are the typical responses that I receive from people when I begin this story. The answer is, yes, she has a broken leg. Just a broken leg, oh and it is broken in three spots and she has a cast.
How did it happen? This is generally the next question people ask and it is usually followed by another quick question? Do you think Gus did it? There are several ideas looming in our minds. Did she jump trying to escape Gus? Did Gus lure her near the window and push her out? Was she sitting quietly and Gus frightened her which caused her to fall out? How did the window get open to begin with?
Ah yes, these are the questions Bill and I have asked ourselves many times. We will never know the real answer but we are positive that Gus was involved and probably at fault in some way. Sandy will have her next check up on Monday and we will see how the leg is heeling. As for Gus, he has felt a great deal of guilt and has not left Sandy's side.
